Cell junctions connecting myocardiocytes

The intercalated discs of the cardiac muscles are frequently associated with gap junctions to ensure fast and efficient transmission of signals during the cardiac cycles. This micrograph shows the direct connection between gap junction and fascia adherens. Image from a normal mouse heart, fixed with glutaraldehyde and embedded in Epoxy resin. Digital image was taken with a FEI Tecnai-T12 microscope. Pseudo-color and label added with Photoshop CS4.
