Cell junctions connecting myocardiocytes (heart muscle cells)

Muscle cells in the heart are connected by specialized junctions, intercalated discs, to form a well-coordinated functional syncytium. The intercalated discs consist of two major types of junctions: fascia adherence and desmosomes, both are clearly shown in this micrograph. Note that the actin (thin) filaments of the sarcomere are terminated only in the fascia adherence, while the desmosomes are not directly associated with the filaments.
